Use of fish oil was shown to significantly decrease blood pressure in overweight adolescent boys. High blood pressure, imbalances in blood lipids and other markers of metabolic and cardiovascular disease can follow adolescents into adult hood potentially leading to more serious disease processes.

A recent study has revealed that the diabetic drug, metformin, will deplete serum levels of vitamin B12 resulting in increased levels of homocysteine. High levels of homocysteine are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

Many, if not most prescription medications, have the side effect of causing vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies which can potentially lead to other unintended complications.

To help reduce homocysteine levels consider using a food based B Complex vitamin (supplementing with just one B vitamin can cause imbalances with other B vitamins, also the study did not look at what it does to other B vitamins with the exception of folic acid) and increasing intake of foods rich in B vitamins.
